Agricultural Policies in Action
Safeguarding Agricultural Product Safety:
Protecting Public Health
To implement the policy of Five-point Food Safety Reform, the
AFA conducts regular sampling and testing of agricultural
products from production sites, including fields and local
collection sites. The agency focuses especially on high-risk
agricultural products, non-certified agricultural products, and fruits
and vegetables for school lunches. When products fail to comply
with standards, farms are required to delay their harvesting and
marketing while local governments conduct investigations under
the Act on Agro-pesticides Management. These cases are
monitored through follow-up sampling to ensure improved
agricultural product quality and protect consumer safety.
The AFA also utilizes mass spectrometry rapid screening technology
to produce highly accurate testing reports in real time. The agency plans
annual pre-harvest sampling of field crops and has deployed mobile
laboratory vehicles equipped with mass spectrometry for rapid testing.
Pre-treatment stations for samples are set up at supplier locations,
enabling testing to be conducted near production sites to improve
efficiency. Additionally, the AFA promotes mass spectrometry rapid
testing by encouraging fruit and vegetable wholesale markets to
prioritize tested products for purchasers. Higher auction prices are
offered as incentives to increase farmer participation, fostering a culture
of self-managed quality control among agricultural producers.
